"MMI is all about children with disabilities being part of the community and helping them to achieve everything they can achieve. BIG splash makes those ideals a reality."
- Mike Leibowitz, Ph.D., Director, Munroe-Meyer Institute
Providing clinical services and exploring innovative therapies for people with disabilities.
BIG splash helps individuals with developmental disabilities and genetic disorders unlock their potential in a BIG way. This event takes a leadership role in the arena of self-acceptance, personal value and goal setting. It has provided hope and direction to families who otherwise might not have access to the same opportunities to lead healthy and productive lives.
Franklin Delano Roosevelt stated, “We know that equality of individual ability has never existed and never will, but we do insist that equality of opportunity still must be sought.” The funds raised by the event provide critical support needed to reach families through our community, giving them the opportunity to soar past perceived boundaries.
While the BIG splash is a multifaceted competitive and recreational swim event, it is for the enjoyment of everyone, whether they like to be in the water or just by it regardless of their ability or age. The morning activities include organized swim events for swimming veterans as well as beginners. The pool creates a level playing field where all participants are rewarded with a ribbon. The afternoon activities have a carnival feel with fun relays for the entire family. “Buddies” and other forms of assistance are provided and scholarships are available for assisted/adaptive swimmers.
Our third annual BIG splash will be Aug. 27, 2011, with even BIGGER expectations. Be sure to check Events, Register or Volunteer for information on getting involved. To learn more about making a tax-deductible gift to the MMI BIG splash fund, visit our Donate page.
